Choosing POS Label Printers

The type of label printing you need and the number of labels you would like to print are the most important points you need to focus on when choosing a POS Label Printer. There are basically 2 types of label printers available based on the way they work- Direct Thermal and Thermal Transfer Label Printers. The choice depends largely on your business applications.

If you are looking to print labels for perishable goods that have a short shelve life, direct thermal printers are the ideal choice. Direct thermal technology makes use of heat sensitive paper and ingrains the image directly into the label by using heat transfer techniques. In this case your label print will fade when exposed to sunlight for long.

The other option is thermal transfer printing where an image is transferred on to the label using an ink ribbon.  The heat melts the ink on the ribbon which is used to create the desired image.

This type of printing uses paper and synthetic label materials. A thermal transfer label printer can offer you labels that are heat, oil, water and chemical resistant.

Your application will be the deciding factor to whether you need a Direct Thermal or Thermal Transfer Label Printer.

How many labels are you looking to print?

While Desktop label printers can efficiently cater to low volume printing of up to 1000 labels a day, they are not ideal for high volume printing. Go for a mid-range printer in case you need to print more than 10,000 labels in a day. You will need an industrial printer for requirements of more than 60,000 labels a day. High performance printers can provide you printing of more than 2 lakh labels for day and are great for critical printing in a busy 24x7 business environment.

Size of labels you need to print:

Label printers come with different size of print heads ranging from 2 inch to 8 inch. Wider the print head, more expensive is the printer. It is advisable to go for a standard 4 inch print head.
