Starting with the types, there are mainly four kinds of cash drawers available. Further explained is each with their purposes.

Manual Cash Drawer:

The most basic way to define a manual cash drawer is a box with a key. There are not many features to a manual cash drawer, except for keeping your money safe. If you do not have a lot of cash inflow and you are the only one who uses the cash drawer, this can be quite a secure and cost-effective option.

The key basically locks the drawer, and there is another mechanical button, pressing which will open it for when you need it. However, the mechanical button will not function if the cash drawer is locked.

Before investing in this product, you must check if you have an extra USB port in your existing POS system. On top of that, you will also have to ensure that the application you use is compatible to communicate with the cash drawer.

Most outdated POS systems do not have this capability. USB drawers also require supplementary devices to communicate with the point of sale applications. Although there might be a slight increase in costs, and USB drawer is perhaps the best investment you can make. It is the most secure out of all the drawers.

Serial Cash Drawer:

RS232 is basically a communication protocol that is driven by your PC through a 9-pin serial connection. While most PCs nowadays do not have a serial port, most sale terminals come with a dedicated feature. There are several varieties of serial cash drawers you can choose from.
